STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) is the educational backbone we use at Destination Science to keep our campers engaged in the world of science. By combining these four disciplines, we’re able to ensure that every student leaves camp with a new sense of empowerment, critical thinking, creative skills, and a collaborative mindset in solving problems.
Science is a broad term that encompasses so many types of learning, but the science of the natural world, what we see and feel around us, is the S in STEM. Understanding the building blocks to the world we live in helps foster an inquisitive mind built for problem solving. With our Super Hero camp, we will discover how spiders and bats have their own scientific powers and skills that other animals don’t possess, in order to solve problems in their lives. By harnessing some of their unique abilities, campers will be able to understand how to navigate through life a little easier with a newfound respect for the natural world.
Technology is an inseparable part of our lives. From cell phones to smart ovens, technology is constantly growing and shaping how we live. Starting with the wheel all the way up to the iPhone, STEM was foundational in making some of the greatest inventions of all time. At camp, students will harness the power of technology and become a techno-wiz by building their own portable music player! With the skills learned in this program, it’s not a stretch to imagine any of our students helping to build the next great piece of technology!
While some find the idea of engineering massive in scope, like building a skyscraper or a bridge, having our students construct a robot dinosaur teaches the same fundamentals. Kids learn how to combine everyday objects into something greater and how to work together to accomplish large goals using teamwork and ingenuity. While robots and dinosaurs are fun, the mindset of improving everyday life with these skills will stick with them for life and help students become more independent, equipped with the knowledge and confidence that large problems can be solved with science.
Math is probably the most important aspect of STEM, as you can’t have good science, quality technology, or safe engineering with faulty math. Understanding mathematics is essential to living a healthy and constructive life, from choosing the right food to being smart with finances. For one week this summer, students will get a taste of the fun side of math with our Roaring Rockets camp, and will be able to take their rocket and launchpad home to further understand math beyond the summer. During our launch, each camper will learn how different aspects of a rocket’s construction affects its potential reach, all by applying math in real-time.
By combining all aspects of STEM, we ensure that kids not only learn essential new skills, but have fun while doing so. We encourage parents to understand STEM and help their children continue the conversation once camp is over, discussing the science of cooking, how far the technology of TVs and phones have come, how well-built cars keep us safe, and how math can help you enjoy things like sports and fitness even more. STEM is all around us and Destination Science is committed to keeping it alive as long as we can!
