August is here and camp is in full swing! Robots are battling, music is being made, rockets are soaring, and superhero cars are saving the day. We are having a blast!
Last week we spent a day at camp in Fullerton, CA and caught up with Nina Canul, Regional Director of Orange County for Destination Science. While enjoying the awesome camp setting, she gave us a little insight into what makes Destination Science a great choice for parents and their kids:
“Our mission is to get kids excited about science and to build great life skills and to have them remember that “A-ha” moment that they had as a kid and be able to transfer that into other classes that they are doing.”
With 20 years of science education to pull from, Canul knows about combining fun and learning into a comprehensive and impactful program. At this particular camp, the instructors were doing just that, teaching kids the ins and outs of robotics. Each camper spent the first part of the day learning the concepts behind motors, gears, and movement, and then put those lessons into practice by building and battling their robotic dinosaurs.
“When they see the robot actually in action,” Canul describes, “they get to turn it on, they get to see it move, and they know the science words behind it…it’s really exciting for them to share their robot with their parents.”
The combination of fun and learning is powerful, Canul continues:
“This is a chance for the kids to have a lot of fun with science in a casual, camp environment, so they are associating science with fun, science with coolness.”
And these projects are cool! Take a look at some of the photos below to see exactly what our campers are working on everyday. Don’t forget, there are still camp spots open for parents looking to have a real positive impact on their child’s summer. Check out our locations page to see if camps are available in your area!
