Destination Science 2015: A Look Back

This summer we launched hundreds of rockets, engineered thousands of robotic dinosaurs, traveled millions of miles into space, and wielded countless super powers as our newest crop of campers discovered the amazing power of science!

Now that school is back in swing, we want to share some of our favorite memories from our eight weeks of camps from across the country.

Amazing Superhero Science

Our Amazing Superhero Science camp was beyond cool! We loved seeing all the creative and fun costumes that our students came up in person and on everyone’s Instagram and Facebook feeds! Beyond the capes and masks, it was a joy to witness campers learn about real life superpowers and the animals that have them. Campers met a tarantula, observed awesome beetles, and learned how their unique abilities are the source of so many of our favorite superheroes, like Spider-Man and Ant-Man. The highlight of the week was watching campers build their own super vehicles, applying what they learned about movement, motion, and acceleration.

Rock N’ Roll Gizmos & Gadgets

We made a whole lot of science rock stars this summer! From drum kits to boomboxes, we broke down the math and science behind our favorite instruments and how sound travels between those instruments and our ears. Every camper took home their very own digital music box, after learning how auxiliary cords help send music from one machine to another. We saw hundreds of awesome drum solos and took our knowledge of gravity, momentum, and velocity to the next level with physics-based gadgets. Our favorite was definitely the impromptu jam sessions we witnessed after everyone’s instruments were built and ready to rock!

Kid Building Dino

Dino-Robot Creators & Raging Chemistry

One thing we loved seeing on social media every week were the unique robo dinosaurs our campers were making. Some went for big and strong, others went the small and speedy route, but everyone’s dinosaur was a reflection of both their personality and understanding of science fundamentals. When we weren’t connecting dinosaur pieces together, we got our gloves dirty understanding the different forms of matter, especially when the slimy ooze showed up! Some of our best experiments were during this time, and we learned about a range of scientific concepts, from light and food to atmosphere and more.

Dino Bots

Roaring Rockets & Astronaut Detectives

This camp was one of our favorites. We spent weeks helping kids understand, design, build, and, eventually, launch our very own rockets! We learned how air pressure can be used as a great force of energy and launched our creations high up in the sky. But we didn’t just stop with Earth, as we looked into the mysteries of the universe, discovering the unique features of each planet in our solar system. We even solved a space mystery that took us from one end of our galaxy to another!

Rocket Blast Off 2015

As we look back at our 2015 camps, we’re so proud of all of our little scientists that went on this educational and fun journey through science, using their unique personalities and developing their minds along the way. The real joy of our summer is the look we see on a camper’s face at the end of the week, when their rocket is soaring through the sky or their robot works exactly like they thought it would, because at that moment, the concepts, experiments, and learnings click in a way that you can’t explain until you feel it happen. We hope you had a great time and be sure to sign up for our newsletter to be notified about upcoming specials and 2016’s dates so we can help light the spark of science that was created this summer!
