A Guide for First-Time Summer Campers

Summer camp is an exciting adventure for little ones. It encourages them to learn new skills while having fun and making friends. If it’s your child’s first time attending summer camp, check out these summer camp tips for parents. We’ll cover everything you need to know to create the best summer camp experience.

How to Know If Your Child Is Ready for Summer Camp

Because each child has unique capabilities and personalities, there isn’t a set age for when they’ll be ready for camp. There are a few indicators you can watch out for, though, such as:

  • Independence: If your child is comfortable being away from you for long periods of time, such as when they can confidently go to school or sleep at a friend’s house, they will likely be mature enough to attend a summer camp.
  • Desire: When your kid is excited about camp and asks to go, that’s one of the best signs they are ready!

Another thing to check is what age the camp’s programs accommodate. At Destination Science, we offer programs for kids ages 5 to 11.

How to Prepare Your Child for Summer Camp

If you and your child decide it’s time to try summer camp, explore options together. Looking at programs online can help you find the best fit. For first-time campers, a day camp can be a great experience. Your child can spend the day learning and having fun then return home in the afternoon. This schedule is similar to going to school, so the familiarity may help your kid feel more confident and comfortable.

Most camps have packing lists readily available online so you can prepare your child with all the items they will need to have an enjoyable experience. Packing lists will vary depending on the type of camp your kid will be attending, but some things you may need to pack include:

  • Healthy lunches and snacks so they have the energy to play and learn.
  • Plenty of water bottles to stay hydrated.
  • Weather-appropriate clothing such as a jacket layer, closed-toed shoes and a hat.

Help your child make the most of their summer camp adventure by leaving behind items such as:

  • Video games
  • Toys
  • Pets
  • Money
  • Valuable items

The best way you can help your child have a fantastic summer camp experience is to support them. Tell them about your excitement and your belief in their ability to learn and grow. Teach them icebreakers they can use to make friends, give them your own summer camp advice and encourage them to have a positive attitude throughout their camp experience.

A few other practical tips to help you prepare for camp:

  • Label your child’s items with their name.
  • Learn what to expect at the summer camp.
  • Communicate frequently with camp staff.
  • Understand what your child will do at camp.
