Robots and Rockets Land in Westchester National Nonprofit Chooses Our County as Next Destination for 5-11 Year-Old Scientists

Westchester, NY February 4, 2013: Westchester County is rapidly becoming the “science hub” of New York, with 20% of all the state’s biotech jobs based in this region. The County will soon become the launch pad for future scientists as well. This summer, Destination Science, the premier science camp for kids, will be opening its first locations in Westchester County.

“Our goal is to give kids as young as five a love of science!” says Kathy Heraghty, a former teacher and athletic trainer, and one of three women co-CEOs who run Destination Science camp. “Many of the jobs of the future will involve STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math),” continues Heraghty. “But kids simply aren’t getting enough of those subjects in their ‘diets!’ This great infographic clearly illustrates the ‘STEM dilemma.’ ”

The Destination Science program is designed to combine science learning with fun. Kids build roller coasters, design and name their own robots, and participate in a bridge-building “survival exercise.” Each one-week session focuses on a different aspect of science and discounts are available for multiple weeks.

Even the outdoor games and snack time are science-themed, as kids play Comet Ball and make Solar S’Mores. Says Heraghty, “We recruit our leaders from among elementary school educators, as well as science instructors. We are looking for the most enthusiastic and energetic team possible.” Destination Science expects to employ 15 leaders in Westchester this summer.

Destination Science will have camp locations in Bedford, Chappaqua, Larchmont, Purchase, Rye, Scarsdale, Tarrytown and White Plains. The camp is run at schools, community centers, churches and synagogues, and other locations that are “kid friendly.”

The camp already has locations in California, Florida, Washington State, Texas, and Long Island.

About Destination Science

Destination Science teaches kids that science is not just about Bunsen burners and formulas. The summer camp is committed to creating a spirit of teamwork, as kids are rewarded for helping their peers throughout the day, learning the power of community, collaboration and character development. The Directors, Kathy Heraghty, Sharon Fogg and Heena Desai, each have extensive backgrounds in child education and a combined 50 years of experience within science. They see the interactive and dynamic activities that Destination Science offers as a foundation for children to truly help change the world. The camp programs for summer 2013 are Crazy Coaster Science and Sea-Fari Park, Wacky Mega-Bot Tech, Astronaut Adventure Camp, and The Ultimate Survival Zone.
